An international team of researchers determined that extreme heat, rather than a mere lack of rainfall, serves as the main trigger for the unprecedented dry spells. The region is currently grappling with diminishing river flows, enforced water restrictions, and extensive wildfires following record-breaking temperatures in June. The recent findings highlight how a warming atmosphere accelerates evaporation from lakes, rivers, and soils in the area. Although this spring saw below-average rainfall, human-induced temperature increases ultimately transformed a dry season into a severe crisis.

    Scientists link global warming to intense European drought

    The study published by the World Weather Attribution group details how rising temperatures actively reduce natural water supplies. Mariam Zachariah, a researcher from Imperial College London, pointed out that the drought is not primarily due to decreased rainfall but is instead driven by a warmer atmosphere causing larger moisture deficits on land. This means that the risk of drought continues to grow even in regions where rainfall patterns remain relatively stable. Scientists explain that for each one-degree Celsius increase in temperature, the atmosphere can hold about seven percent more water vapor. This enhanced capacity directly results in increased evaporation from soils and vegetation across the landscape.

    Using extensive weather data and sophisticated computer models, researchers compared today’s hotter climate to a scenario that was 1.4 degrees Celsius cooler. The results showed that soils in western Europe are now five times more likely to experience extreme dryness than in a world without human-induced warming. In eastern Europe, these soil moisture deficits are 11 times more probable. The analysis also revealed that the exceptionally high evaporative demand observed between April and June in western Europe increased the likelihood of such events by about 80 times. Consequently, rainfall deficits that once would not have caused severe drought are now leading to significantly drier soils.

    Impact of Extreme Heat on Soil Moisture Levels

    Dominik Schumacher, a scientist from ETH Zurich, emphasized that the tendency for unusual soil drying was already evident in spring before summer’s arrival. He explained that as temperatures climb, the atmosphere’s thirst intensifies quickly, drawing vital moisture from rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and soil. The combination of a relatively wet start to the year followed by extreme heat created ideal conditions for large wildfires. The rapid drying of the land prepared it for ignition, contributing to severe fires across multiple countries. The analysis confirms that climate change, by intensifying drought across europe, is transforming traditional weather patterns into highly hazardous cycles.

    The agricultural sector endures unprecedented pressure due to widespread loss of essential soil moisture. Drought conditions are severely impacting farming communities, causing historic crop failures across various nations. France, for instance, is projected to record its lowest maize harvest in 50 years, indicating a major disruption in regional food supply. Likewise, Romania has lost over one million hectares of maize, further threatening the stability of agricultural production. These domestic shortfalls, combined with ongoing global conflicts, have the potential to push food prices higher and disproportionately impact low-income households.

    Heat Overcomes Low Rainfall Shortfalls

    Hydrological effects are adding to the economic toll, with unusually low river levels disrupting vital transport networks. Significant shipping disruptions along key waterways highlight the escalating severity of the continent’s water scarcity crisis. Reduced flow in major rivers directly endangers energy production in regions heavily reliant on hydropower. Data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service confirmed that June was the hottest on record in western Europe. Many countries have already introduced emergency restrictions or temporary bans on non-essential drinking water use to conserve dwindling supplies.

    The scientific community warns that if global temperatures continue to rise, drought conditions could become even more frequent. Experts stress that these intense evaporative conditions are already occurring at 1.4 degrees Celsius of warming, underscoring the immediate risks of current emissions levels. If global temperatures increase to 2.8 degrees Celsius, as projected, the likelihood of such conditions could double. Without swift and substantial emissions reductions, specialists warn that Europe may face a future marked by relentlessly hot and dry summers.
