GUATEMALA / RankWire.AI / – Guatemala has escalated its warning level to the highest across three departments due to the ongoing violent eruption of the volcano Fuego, which has led to evacuations and disrupted communities nearby. Authorities issued red alerts in Chimaltenango, Sacatepéquez, and Escuintla, with an orange alert still active nationwide. Approximately 29,000 individuals experienced ashfall in 18 different communities, while emergency crews maintained evacuation directives in zones close to the volcano.

Guatemala raises red alert as Fuego volcano erupts
Guatemala maintains red alerts as Fuego volcano activity affects nearby communities.

The eruption started on Monday, gaining strength as ash, gas, and lava emerged from the crater. Pyroclastic flows traveled through several ravines on Fuego’s western and southwestern slopes, reaching distances of between five and seven kilometers. These flows, containing hot gases, ash, and rocks, are capable of moving rapidly. Monitoring teams also observed an ash column drifting west and northwest, with volcanic debris reaching areas well beyond the immediate danger zone.

Initial evacuations were initiated in the communities of El Porvenir and Las Lajitas, located in San Juan Alotenango. About 250 people from roughly 50 families were evacuated at first. As more residents in vulnerable zones left, authorities expanded shelter operations. Currently, five shelters are accommodating around 1,699 people, with three additional sites on standby. At these temporary facilities, families are receiving food, medical assistance, security, and other essential services.

Support Provided by Emergency Shelters to Evacuated Populations

Guatemala’s disaster management agency, CONRED, coordinated the evacuations and emergency relief efforts with local authorities. The agency urged residents to steer clear of ravines, adhere to official instructions, and keep emergency supplies prepared. It also recommended covering stored water and food to prevent ash contamination. People in affected zones were advised to wear masks or damp cloths over their noses and mouths. Emergency teams remain deployed across the three departments under red alert status.

INSIVUMEH, Guatemala’s volcano and weather institute, reported that the most intense phase involved multiple pyroclastic flows in the ravines of Seca, Taniluyá, Ceniza, Las Lajas, and Honda. Persistent emissions of gases, lava, and ash kept seismic activity high. The scientific team employed field observers, seismic and infrasound sensors, cameras, and satellite imagery to monitor the eruption. Ash dispersal reached regions such as Sololá, Quetzaltenango, Suchitepéquez, Retalhuleu, and San Marcos, extending beyond the three departments under red alert.

Road Closures and Ash Impacting Local Communities

During the emergency, National Route 14, a vital roadway near the volcano, was shut down. The Education Ministry suspended classes in nearby communities, while road crews monitored access points and travel conditions. La Aurora International Airport continued functioning under protocols for volcanic ash, as per government reports. Security patrols also kept watch over evacuated neighborhoods to safeguard properties and assist residents who had left the area. Access to some zones exposed to the volcano was temporarily restricted.

Heavy rains posed an additional hazard by increasing the risk of lahars, which are fast-moving mudflows formed when water mixes with volcanic debris. These flows can descend ravines carrying ash, rocks, and other debris. As of the latest update, authorities confirmed no structural damage had been reported, and mudflows had not reached any villages. Fuego, among Central America’s most active volcanoes, is situated approximately 30 kilometers south of Guatemala City and has a long history of disruptive eruptions.
