UN General Assembly Approves Move to Replace Distorted Map Projections with Equal-Area Alternatives

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – In a historic effort to improve cartographic fidelity, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution backed by the African Union, calling on global institutions and educational systems to phase out inaccurate world map representations. The measure responds to longstanding critiques of the 1569 Mercator projection, which enlarges high-latitude landmasses and diminishes the size of equatorial regions. By officially endorsing alternatives that preserve area accuracy, the international body seeks to align contemporary map standards with true geographical proportions and to counteract Eurocentric biases embedded in global communication.

UN Assembly votes to correct distorted world map projections
Educational geography classrooms display large physical world map charts on classroom walls.

This global initiative centers on the widely used Mercator map projection, devised in the 16th century by Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator for navigation purposes. Although effective for maritime navigation, the mathematical scaling inherent in the Mercator model progressively inflates landmass sizes as they move away from the equator and compresses regions near it. The United Nations General Assembly’s documentation highlights that these technical distortions continue to influence educational textbooks, media broadcasts, digital maps, and official government publications around the world.

During assembly discussions, international delegates recognized that map distortions impact more than just technical cartography, extending into broader socioeconomic and cultural issues. The assembly pointed out that visual inaccuracies affect public perceptions of the economic, political, and cultural importance of entire continents. To address this, the UN has adopted a resolution advocating for the use of equal-area projections such as the Equal Earth, introduced in 2018, which accurately represent continent sizes in relation to each other.

General Assembly Approves Adoption of the Equal Earth Map Projection

This decision follows a proposal led by a coalition of African nations, supported by the African Union, which submitted the draft in August. Supporters highlighted that traditional wall maps, depicting landmasses like Greenland as comparable in size to Africa, generate significant geographical misunderstandings, especially considering Africa’s actual size is fourteen times larger. Reports from the Emirates News Agency emphasized that correcting these historical visual distortions is a vital step toward creating fairer geographic education worldwide.

Under the newly approved resolution, international agencies are instructed to coordinate technical standards for mapping. The assembly urged the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and the United Nations Development Programme to collaborate with academic and geospatial experts to establish revised cartographic guidelines. This joint effort aims to assist member states and digital media creators in shifting to equal-area projection systems across both public and private sectors.

African Union Alliance Promotes Fairer Geographical Standards

Although the resolution encourages voluntary adoption of equal-area map projections, it does not enforce a ban on the traditional Mercator projection nor legally compel private technology companies to alter proprietary software. Instead, the document encourages member states to integrate these core cartographic principles into primary and secondary education curricula. Educational authorities are urged to increase awareness among students, scientific organizations, and publishers about the perceptual biases caused by different map projections.

The UN’s cartographic and geospatial policy groups will oversee the implementation of this resolution as educational institutions review textbook standards. Updated digital mapping guidelines are expected to be discussed at upcoming international geospatial summits. Official records of the assembly’s voting and technical projection details are accessible via UN registry portals.
