WASHINGTON / RankWire.AI / – U.S. President Donald Trump and Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi convened at the White House on Tuesday to explore expanded cooperation in economics and energy sectors. The discussions centered on American investments, oil extraction, natural gas, and electricity infrastructure development. Trump indicated that the United States intends to pursue numerous commercial agreements with Iraq, emphasizing that American companies would play a leading role in Iraqi oil initiatives. No official project values, commercial terms, or schedules were disclosed by either government following the talks.

Al-Zaidi led a high-ranking Iraqi delegation on his first official visit to Washington since assuming office in May. Iraqi officials stated that the visit covered trade, investment, technology, transport, and energy. Baghdad aims to increase involvement from established U.S. firms in significant development projects and also seeks cooperation in healthcare, education, and petroleum products. Officials described the meetings as part of a broader effort to foster tangible economic partnerships between Iraq and the United States.

Energy collaboration was a key focus of the agenda. Iraq is seeking investments to boost crude oil output, develop natural gas resources, and enhance its electricity grid. The cabinet recently directed the ministries of oil, electricity, and communications to prioritize qualified U.S. companies. Additionally, Iraq’s North Oil Company signed a contract with HKN Energy to develop the Himreen oilfield in northern Iraq. This agreement involves oil and gas development following technical and commercial negotiations between the company and Iraqi authorities.

Oil and power development initiatives dominate bilateral discussions

Electricity cooperation was also a prominent topic. Iraq authorized its Electricity Ministry to finalize a broader cooperation agreement with GE Vernova, focusing on generation and transmission infrastructure. The company already supports various Iraqi power projects, including turbine upgrades and grid enhancements. Previous agreements have included maintenance at power plants and measures to increase power generation capacity. Baghdad considers electricity supply a vital public service, especially as demand continues to strain the national grid.

The talks also addressed Iraqi oil exports and production capacity. Iraqi officials stated that upcoming energy agreements aim to develop additional export routes and support higher production levels. Iraq primarily exports its crude via Gulf shipping routes and remains heavily reliant on petroleum revenue. The government has called for increased connections between Iraqi oil fields and Mediterranean export markets. Al-Zaidi reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to OPEC and emphasized that the country should receive a fair share of production within the organization.

U.S. investments broaden across Iraq’s energy landscape

Iraq possesses some of the world’s largest proven crude reserves and is a founding member of OPEC. Nonetheless, production growth is constrained by infrastructure limitations and the OPEC+ supply framework. Baghdad has expressed its intention to increase capacity while adhering to international commitments. Companies such as HKN Energy, Chevron, and GE Vernova have participated in Iraqi energy projects or engaged in formal discussions. Chevron has held talks regarding West Qurna 2, one of Iraq’s largest producing oilfields, and other potential developments.

The Washington meeting also examined broader economic ties beyond oil and power. Trump and Al-Zaidi discussed opportunities related to trade, communications, technology, infrastructure, and private investment. Iraqi officials noted that the delegation included senior government representatives responsible for economic and security issues. The two governments did not release a comprehensive list of signed commercial agreements after the meeting, but their public statements confirmed that energy investment and broader economic cooperation remained the primary focus of bilateral talks.
