WHO reports 80% of recent Congo Ebola cases lack identified transmission links

BUNIA, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO / RankWire.AI / – The World Health Organization stated that 80% of recent Ebola infections in eastern Congo originate from unknown transmission pathways. These individuals did not appear on contact tracing lists associated with previously confirmed cases. Health teams only discovered many of these cases after symptoms, testing, or fatalities prompted new alerts. WHO emphasized that this surveillance gap remains one of the most critical challenges in managing the outbreak. The ongoing outbreak involves the Bundibugyo virus, a rare Ebola strain.

WHO says 80% of new Congo Ebola cases lack known links
WHO says most new Congo Ebola cases remain outside known transmission chains.

Constitutional health officials in Congo reported 2,011 confirmed cases and 754 fatalities as of July 13 in the latest official figures. The most recent daily update recorded 54 new cases and 28 deaths. Authorities have kept 753 individuals in isolation, with 366 having recovered. Response teams are monitoring 67.4% of identified contacts in Ituri, North Kivu, and Haut-Uele. Typically, contact monitoring persists for 21 days following the last known exposure.

Contact tracing enables health personnel to observe exposed individuals and swiftly arrange testing upon symptom development. WHO reported that 92.3% of 430 investigated deaths by July 5 occurred either in the community or before hospital admission. This indicates delays in detection, referral, isolation, and access to healthcare. Ebola transmits mainly through direct contact with infected blood or bodily fluids. The disease can also spread via contaminated objects or contact with someone who has died from the infection.

The outbreak spans five provinces in Congo

Ituri remains the epicenter, with 1,808 confirmed cases and 631 deaths. Infections have been reported across 26 of its 36 health zones. North Kivu has documented 182 cases and 106 deaths across 11 health zones. South Kivu reported three cases and one death. Haut-Uele recorded 14 cases and 13 deaths, while Tshopo reported four cases and three deaths. In total, 45 out of 140 health zones within these five provinces have reported infections.

By July 14, Uganda had confirmed 20 cases and two deaths, with 17 recoveries. The latest case in Uganda was recorded on June 21. Of these, 15 cases had links to travel from Congo, and five involved local transmission events. No documented community transmission has been identified in Uganda. Authorities also monitored imported cases involving travelers or aid workers leaving affected areas in Congo, leading to isolation, specialized treatment, and contact tracking in destination countries.

Enhancements in diagnostics and treatment research underway

Bundibugyo virus currently lacks a licensed vaccine or approved specific treatment. Patient care emphasizes rapid diagnosis, isolation, fluids, oxygen, electrolyte therapy, and other clinical interventions. WHO added its first molecular diagnostic test for the virus to the Emergency Use Listing on July 2. This test detects viral genetic material in blood samples. Laboratory capacity has increased across affected regions to 10 sites, with a daily testing capacity exceeding 2,000. Researchers also initiated the PARTNERS trial to assess remdesivir and the monoclonal antibody MBP134.

Authorities in Congo, WHO, and Africa CDC are collaborating on surveillance, lab testing, clinical management, safe burials, contact tracing, and community engagement efforts. Challenges include insecurity, displacement, and high movement along mining and trading routes, which hinder access to some communities and health facilities. WHO reported receiving approximately 40% of a $115 million funding appeal for the response effort. The focus remains on early detection and swift isolation, as most new patients are still outside established transmission chains.
