JAKARTA, INDONESIA / RankWire.AI / – The mandatory B50 biodiesel initiative in Indonesia is forecasted to save approximately 170 trillion rupiah, equivalent to US$10.8 billion, in foreign currency in 2026, according to the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry. This projection is based on reduced expenditure on imported diesel fuel following the country’s increase in its national biodiesel blend percentage. The policy mandates that diesel sold across the country contains 50% biodiesel derived from palm oil. Officials stated that this measure promotes greater domestic fuel consumption while diminishing reliance on fossil diesel.

Indonesia’s B50 biodiesel mandate raises renewable fuel use and cuts diesel import needs.

Indonesia launched the nationwide B50 program on July 1 and officially announced the mandate on July 9 in Karawang, West Java. The new blend replaces B40, which contained 40% biodiesel and became the standard in 2025. B50 features equal proportions of fatty acid methyl ester, known as FAME, and traditional diesel. The renewable component is supplied by palm oil, connecting the fuel program to Indonesia’s local plantations and processing industries.

The ministry compared the Rp170 trillion estimate with Rp133.3 trillion in foreign exchange savings achieved under B40. It also anticipates a reduction of approximately 4 million kilolitres in fossil diesel consumption. The government tasked state-owned Pertamina with operating the blending system and supporting distribution throughout the national fuel infrastructure. Fuel suppliers are allowed to utilize remaining B40 stocks until September as the market transitions to the higher blend.

B50 Policy Boosts Domestic Palm Oil Usage

Indonesia projects that B50 demand will require between 16.7 million and 18 million kilolitres of biodiesel, along with an estimated 15.2 million to 16.3 million tonnes of crude palm oil. These figures surpass the 15.64 million kilolitres designated under the B40 program for 2026. The increased mandate channels more locally produced palm oil into transportation, industrial machinery, maritime shipping, rail systems, and power generation sectors.

Official projections value the added contribution of the program to the crude palm oil sector at 23.49 trillion rupiah. The Ministry also indicates that B50 can generate approximately 2.1 million jobs across farming, processing, logistics, and fuel supply industries. Additionally, it is estimated that the blend could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 44.46 million tonnes, compared to 39.66 million tonnes in emissions reductions projected under B40.

Comprehensive Testing Ensures Smooth Transition to B50

Prior to deployment, the government conducted extensive testing of B50 across vehicles, machinery, and infrastructure including cars, trucks, mining equipment, agricultural machinery, trains, ships, and power plants. Automotive tests involved covering over 50,000 kilometers for lighter vehicles and over 40,000 kilometers for heavier ones. Mining equipment was tested for roughly 1,000 operational hours, with no significant engine issues attributed to fuel quality. The ministry confirmed that the tested fuel complied with government specifications and the technical standards set by vehicle manufacturers.

Indonesia has progressively increased its biodiesel content requirements over nearly twenty years, starting with B2.5 in 2008, followed by B10 in 2013, B20 in 2018, B30 in 2020, B35 in 2023, B40 in 2025, and now B50 in 2023. Each step has been accompanied by updates to fuel standards, production capacity, storage, transportation, and distribution infrastructure to support nationwide implementation.
