NEW DELHI, INDIA / MENA Newswire / — Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni co-authored a joint opinion article on India-Italy relations, describing the bilateral relationship as having reached a decisive stage. The Press Information Bureau said the article highlighted the two countries’ Special Strategic Partnership, with Modi emphasizing innovation, democratic values and a common vision for the future as central elements of the relationship.

India-Italy ties remain in focus as leaders emphasize innovation and strategic cooperation.

Modi shared the message on X on May 20, 2026, stating that India and Italy had reached a decisive point in their ties. His post referred to the partnership with Italy as one shaped by shared democratic values and cooperation in innovation. The remarks came during the same period as official engagements between the two leaders in Rome, where bilateral cooperation featured across several areas.

The India-Italy relationship has expanded through regular political dialogue, trade discussions and cooperation in technology, defence, space, energy, education and culture. The joint article placed the relationship within that broader framework, identifying the partnership as one based on common democratic principles and practical collaboration. Official statements issued around the visit said the two governments reviewed progress under existing bilateral plans and discussed additional areas of engagement.

    Strategic partnership gains official focus

The Ministry of External Affairs said Modi and Meloni held talks in Rome on May 20 and reviewed the full range of India-Italy cooperation. The two leaders agreed to elevate the relationship from a Strategic Partnership to a Special Strategic Partnership and to hold annual meetings at the leaders’ level, including on the sidelines of multilateral events, along with regular ministerial and institutional consultations.

The discussions covered trade and investment, defence and security, science and technology, research and innovation, space, energy, artificial intelligence, critical technologies, education, culture and people-to-people links. The two sides also referred to the Joint Strategic Action Plan for 2025-2029, which sets out areas of cooperation including political dialogue, economic engagement, connectivity, clean energy, emerging technologies, higher education and security coordination.

Innovation and democratic values frame ties

A joint declaration issued during the visit included cooperation on artificial intelligence, secure digital infrastructure, supercomputing, startup exchanges and scientific research. It also referred to space cooperation between Indian and Italian institutions, along with defence industrial collaboration covering co-production and co-development. The declaration reaffirmed support for a free, open, secure and stable digital environment as an enabler of innovation and economic growth.

The joint opinion article by Modi and Meloni added a public political message to the official outcomes of the visit, framing India-Italy relations as a partnership grounded in innovation, democracy and shared priorities. The statements issued on May 20 placed the relationship within a wider agenda that includes government dialogue, technology cooperation, economic ties and people-to-people engagement between India and Italy.
